The moment of truth for Lebanon

High Representative of the EU Josep Borrell stated that Lebanon has reached a critical moment in its existence, where everything depends on whether the parties can declare a ceasefire and refrain from further military actions. During an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, he called for a political solution that would prevent further escalation of the conflict and the collapse of the country's state institutions.

Speaking in Mexico to journalists, Borrell stressed that the European Union has always supported a diplomatic resolution of the conflict in Lebanon, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the formation of a new government in the country. The High Representative of the EU also noted that Israeli strikes on Hezbollah leaders on Lebanese territory have caused significant casualties and violated the country's sovereignty.

"The European Union renews its call for an immediate ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel and calls on both sides for the full and symmetrical implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, ensuring the safe return of displaced populations on both sides, as part of a broader settlement through negotiations... The sovereignty of both Lebanon and Israel must be assured," said Borrell.

In the context of the escalating conflict, the European Union has provided substantial financial assistance to Lebanon. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the allocation of 1 billion euros to support the country, of which 500 million euros were already allocated in August. In addition, the EU and the European Peace Facility agreed to provide Lebanon with another 25 million euros and humanitarian aid to ensure security and stability in the region.

The Lebanese Armed Forces will also play an important role in restoring stability. The High Representative of the EU called on them to become guarantors of internal and regional security so that the country can regain its monopoly on the use of force. In this context, the provision of aid from the EU could be a critical element.

EU countries also called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and to make every effort to achieve a ceasefire and resolve the conflict.
