According to TSN.ua: In March 2021, 27-year-old British man Tommy Graves sacrificed his sleep for a charity challenge, a decision that ultimately cost him his mental health. He remained awake for more than a week—a total of eight days—which led to severe psychiatric issues. By depriving himself of at least 56 hours of sleep, Graves began experiencing hallucinations and other mental disturbances, resulting in his admission to a psychiatric hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with a manic episode featuring psychosis.
Graves admitted that despite all attempts, he was completely unable to fall asleep.
“I couldn't sleep at all, no matter how hard I tried, because my brain wouldn't switch off,” he stated.Following the ordeal, he spent four weeks in a psychiatric unit undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. Graves emphasized that he never imagined such a situation could happen to him. Sleep deprivation challenges, while sometimes undertaken for fundraising, carry extreme and unpredictable risks to mental and physical well-being.
Tommy's Sleep Advice
Now recovered, Tommy shares his experience and offers recommendations to help others avoid similar situations. He advises:
- Avoid bright lights and blue light from electronic devices for at least 90 minutes before bed.
- Refrain from mentally or physically exhausting tasks in the hour leading up to sleep.
- Do not eat within three hours of going to sleep.
- Consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine daily, and avoid coffee less than eight hours before bedtime.
“Once I learned to sleep properly, my brain started working better and my productivity increased,” Graves shared.His story serves as a stark reminder of sleep's critical role in mental health and overall wellness.
