The 2023 Bucha Summit

According to UATV: On March 31, 2023, the Bucha Summit brought together 23 international delegations. The event honored the memory of those killed during Russia’s aggression, especially the victims of the 33-day occupation of Bucha. Over 600 Ukrainian civilians were confirmed dead during that period.

Remarks by Ukraine’s President

In his address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the need for continued global solidarity:

“We are deeply grateful for your support and for standing with the Ukrainian people right here—where it matters and where it hurts.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

He also argued that Russia will not halt its military campaign as long as it retains the resources to sustain it:

“Russia does not want to end the war as long as it has two things. The first is oil, which gives them the means to kill.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy insisted that remembrance must lead to concrete action: “The memory of Bucha demands not just sympathy—it demands decisions.” He described the horrors of the occupation, stating: “Terror, torture, 33 days of absolute evil, over 600 murdered Ukrainians.” The president also drew a historical parallel, noting that Nazism faced punishment for its crimes, not a partial easing of sanctions: “Nazism was punished for its crimes, not given a partial relaxation of sanctions.”

Annual summits commemorating the victims of aggression have been held since 2023. The delegations at this summit included representatives from Germany, Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, underscoring broad international backing for Ukraine during this critical period.

The event marked a significant step in building a global coalition to support Ukraine and honor those lost to aggression. Given the war’s duration and devastating impact, such gatherings play a vital role in raising worldwide awareness about the situation in Ukraine and the urgent need for decisive action against the aggressor. President Zelenskyy’s speech reinforced that support must go beyond moral solidarity and include practical measures to counter the enemy.
