Budanov on Holocaust Remembrance: Passive Memory Fails to Prevent New Genocides.
Honoring the Victims of the Holocaust
According to Novyny.live: On January 27, Ukraine and the world commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. This year, Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence, stressed that the global community must take active steps to confront new genocidal acts. He emphasized that passive remembrance of past tragedies has not prevented fresh crimes against humanity. Budanov noted that in 1945, soldiers of the 1st Ukrainian Front liberated the prisoners of Auschwitz, and that six million Jews perished in the Holocaust, 1.5 million of whom were Ukrainian. The date marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and serves as a global day of remembrance.
Today we honor the memory of the Holocaust's victims, but we must also acknowledge a bitter truth: passive remembrance has not served as a safeguard against new genocides. The proof of this is Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Kyrylo Budanov
He called on the international community to halt Russia's war crimes in Ukraine, stating that only just punishment for such crimes can ensure the slogan 'Never Again' finally becomes a reality.
Contemporary Threats and Remembrance
Commemorating the victims of the Holocaust on this day serves as a crucial reminder of the need not only to remember past tragedies but also to actively counter modern threats. In light of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, Budanov's appeals to the international community underscore the continued relevance of combating genocide and war crimes today. This context gives new meaning to the 'Never Again' pledge, which must serve not just as a memory of past events, but as a guide for decisive action in the present world.
