According to ТСН: During the war, Ukrainians increasingly choose life in rural areas because it's quieter, although job opportunities are limited. However, this situation may change significantly after the war ends.

Prospects of resettlement after the war

Director of the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Ella Libanova said in an interview with the TV channel "Novyny.LIVE" how resettlement in Ukraine might look in the future. She noted:

"One thing is during the war, another is after the war. During the war, people gravitate towards the village; it's quieter here. Well, I live in a village and it is much calmer for me than in Kyiv. I see it myself. Sometimes it happens that you get startled, but it's not so terrifying. On the other hand, there is not much work in the village."

Libanova believes that after the war is over, Ukrainians will return to cities that may become new centers of attraction. She pointed to the following cities:

"But after the war, the situation will change, and most likely, the population will again gravitate towards the cities. The majority will be metropolitan cities, namely Kyiv. I am still confident that Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Odesa, and possibly Zaporizhzhia will emerge if it develops independently out of the Dnipro riverbed. Donetsk, maybe, I don't know. It's hard to say."

Predictions regarding citizens' return

According to Libanova's forecasts, only 30% of citizens will return to Ukraine after the war, although earlier it was expected that this would be 60%. The change in forecast is related to massive destruction and the adaptation of people who have found new lives abroad. The main factor influencing the return will be security, especially the risks of future aggression. Housing availability and employment opportunities will also be crucial. Those who left with their families will have the least chance of returning.

These forecasts reflect the real challenges that Ukraine will face after the war. The return of citizens and the recovery of the economy will require efforts from both the state and society. It is important to create conditions for safe and comfortable living in cities to encourage people to return home and rebuild the country.
