The government increases childbirth benefits to 50 thousand: what do Kyiv residents say

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the draft law on family assistance a week ago. The document provides for an increase in the one-time payment to women after giving birth. Now it will be increased many times — to about 50 thousand hryvnias.

Journalists from Novyny.LIVE found out the opinion of Kyiv residents about the Cabinet's decision.

Is 50 thousand UAH enough for childbirth?

Kyiv residents are openly pleased with the Cabinet's decision to increase childbirth payments. However, they believe the amount is not large enough.

'Better to have 70,000 hryvnias at least, because prices for children's goods are very high now. And in general, raising children is difficult. Parents often do not hold respectable positions, so 70 thousand would be sufficient,' says Veronika.

Kyiv resident Irina believes that payments do not motivate Ukrainians to increase birth rates. In her opinion, young people will consider having children only when stability and order return to the country.

'I think this is not enough, firstly. And secondly, it will not encourage having children in today's situation. Given the events under the president's administration — protests against the draft law on NABU. It makes absolutely no sense. How can you raise a child in such conditions?' says Irina.

On the other hand, Kyiv resident Svyatoslav is cautiously pleased with the changes, as it is quite difficult to allocate funds for social initiatives during wartime:

'An interesting question. At least this much is better. It used to be 10 thousand hryvnias and even then 600-700 UAH per month. So now it will become much better. Especially under our conditions, when all our money goes to armament and the state found some funds to improve social needs. That's great.'

What is known about the new draft law

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine made the decision on July 14. The details of the draft law were explained by then-Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The one-time payment after childbirth will increase from 10.3 thousand hryvnias to 50 thousand.

Payments to women without professional experience will also increase — it was less than a thousand hryvnias, and it will become 7 thousand per month. In particular, one of the parents will be able to receive assistance for childcare until the child reaches one year of age every month. However, the amount of these payments is not yet agreed upon.

Ukrainian journalists surveyed Kyiv residents about the Cabinet's decision to increase childbirth payments. Many capital residents believe that the amount of 50 thousand hryvnias still leaves much to be desired and does not motivate increasing birth rates in the country. However, some noted that in modern conditions, any improvement in social payments is an important step towards improving the lives of Ukrainian families.
