The priest explained why it is forbidden to throw coins into the coffin of the deceased.
According to ТСН: Priest-blogger Oleksiy Filyuk from Ternopil region debunked a popular superstition by explaining why it is not advisable to throw coins into the coffin or grave of the deceased. He addressed this issue on his Instagram.
Filyuk emphasized that these actions are merely human superstitions and folk traditions that have no confirmation whatsoever.
“By neither God’s word nor the teachings of the church is there any church or religious basis. This is human fabrications, and one should not do this. But you cannot forbid people. Just the other day there was a funeral — they throw hryvnias and kopecks so that the grandfather is rich there. This should not be done. It won’t help him there,” Filyuk noted.
At the same time, the priest advises the relatives of the deceased, if possible, to engage in charity and help the needy.
“It’s better to buy a bun, give it to a needy person, buy some pampushka or vatrushka. That will be of greater benefit to you, to your life, than throwing something into the grave for the deceased. You can throw anything you want, even throw a tractor there, it won’t help him anymore. Let's not engage in rituals that have nothing to do with Christianity. Believe in God, live according to the Gospel, may God help everyone,” summarized Oleksiy Filyuk.
Earlier, the priest also considered whether it is necessary to sit next to the deceased all night.
Oleksiy Filyuk's words encourage one to reflect on the true essence of commemorating the deceased. Instead of adhering to traditions that have no basis, he suggests focusing on good deeds that can genuinely benefit the living. This adds new meaning to acts of remembrance for those who have passed away, emphasizing the importance of kindness and helping others.
