Headache from food: which products trigger migraines - explains a dietitian.
According to ТСН: A headache can appear suddenly for various reasons - from stress to ordinary fatigue. But sometimes its source hides in nutrition.
Why headaches are more frequent in women
According to an expert, hormonal changes, particularly fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels, can exacerbate headaches. This partly explains why women suffer from them more often. However, up to 20% of cases of pain are directly related to nutrition.
Among the most common food triggers are biogenic amines, especially histamine and tyramine. They are found in hard cheeses, fermented products, sausages, chocolate, nuts, and alcohol.
The specialist notes: a combination of wine, Roquefort cheese, and chocolate dessert can lead to headaches. Particularly dangerous are stale products or those that have been stored for a long time, as their tyramine levels increase.
Sulfites are added to products to prevent the growth of bacteria. They are found in wine, beer, dried fruits, jelly, chips, jam, seafood, and processed meats. With regular consumption, this compound can accumulate in the body and cause headaches.
The artificial sweetener aspartame is used in most sweetened carbonated beverages such as Fanta, Coca-Cola, chewing gum, and quick breakfasts. It can also trigger headaches in sensitive individuals.
Monosodium glutamate is widely used in sausages, dry sauces, canned foods, seasonings, croutons, and chips. This additive can provoke severe migraines. For sensitive people, the expert recommends avoiding dishes from Asian cuisine, where it is used very often.
The dietitian recommends keeping a food diary. Record what you ate before the onset of pain. This will help identify the trigger food and limit or completely exclude it from your diet.
It was previously reported that an international team of scientists conducted a large meta-analysis of 24 studies involving over 54,000 people from different continents. The results are striking: a significant difference in blood pressure between the right and left arm may indicate an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, or even premature death.
Therefore, understanding food triggers can help reduce the number of headache attacks. Monitor your diet, and it may become an important step in improving your quality of life. For everyone suffering from headaches, it is essential to know about possible causes of their occurrence and take steps to eliminate them.
