In Sweden, seat belts are banned: an unusual rule for ice roads.
According to ТСН: In most countries around the world, seat belts are mandatory for drivers and passengers, and ignoring them leads to fines. However, there are atypical exceptions, particularly in Switzerland.
In northern Sweden, winter brings 'ice roads' — temporary routes laid over frozen rivers and lakes. Since detours can take dozens of kilometers, local authorities allow vehicles to drive directly over the ice. However, the new rules may come as a surprise.
Why seat belts are being canceled
Experts explain that the icy surface is unstable, and while the risk of falling through the ice is minimal, it still exists. In case of an emergency, drivers and passengers should exit the vehicle as quickly as possible. Buckled seat belts could delay valuable seconds and complicate evacuation.
Moreover, driving on ice roads is strictly controlled:
maximum speed — no more than 30 km/h;
distance between vehicles — at least 50 meters;
stopping is prohibited, as restarting can create danger and additional strain on the ice.
Such routes only operate under stable weather conditions and are constantly monitored by special services.
Additionally, experts shared an interesting method for combating ice on windshields. At LeaseCar, they recommend using a common onion: cut it in half and rub the windshield before leaving the vehicle overnight. The natural oils create a thin protective layer that prevents moisture buildup and breaks up frost during formation.
This initiative to cancel seat belts on 'ice roads' is driven by the desire to enhance driver safety in emergency situations. Sweden's experience with ice routes may also influence the establishment of new safety standards for winter roads in other countries. The devised method for combating ice on windshields is simple, accessible, and could be beneficial for many drivers during the winter period.
