Kyiv Council Deputy Breaks Spine in Ice Fall, Sidelined for Four Months.
Kyiv Council Deputy Sustains Injury
According to Novyny.live: Kyiv City Council deputy Yevhen Kuzmenko suffered a spinal fracture after slipping on ice and will be unable to perform his active duties for at least four months. The accident occurred on January 20 when Kuzmenko lost his footing on a slick surface. Such winter hazards are a recurring challenge in Ukrainian cities, where rapid thaws and freezes are common.
Response to the Incident
This incident occurred just one day after Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, on January 19, had issued instructions for ice to be cleared from courtyards, sidewalks, and public transport stops to prevent such accidents. However, the cleanup efforts proved more effective in the Pechersk district than in the Dniprovsky district.
Following his injury, Yevhen Kuzmenko shared his thoughts on the situation, stating:
“I sincerely thank the city services and management companies. Winter arrived unexpectedly. A spinal fracture, out for at least 4 months. I am ashamed of our collective work.”

His remarks underscore the critical importance of effective winter management in the city and the urgent need to improve the condition of sidewalks and roads for resident safety.
The incident involving Deputy Kuzmenko highlights ongoing public safety concerns during Kyiv's winter season. Despite measures taken to address icy conditions, the inadequate response in certain city districts could lead to similar injuries in the future. This event may serve as a catalyst for municipal services to refine their snow and ice removal protocols and enhance safety on public pathways.
