Ukrainian Lawmaker Proposes Ending Anonymity for Major Telegram Channels.
Yaroslav Yurchyshyn's Legislative Proposal
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn has proposed legislative amendments to end anonymity for large Telegram channels, aiming to combat disinformation. His central proposal involves establishing clear criteria for the owners of channels with substantial audiences. Once a channel reaches a specific user threshold, it would be required to register officially.
During an interview with KYIV24, Yurchyshyn noted that Telegram's administration does not communicate with official Kyiv, complicating efforts to monitor information flows. He stressed that the state cannot leave the situation uncontrolled, as regulating Telegram channels is a matter of national security. This initiative reflects growing government concern over the platform's role in Ukraine's information space, which has become a critical front in the ongoing conflict.
The Significance of the Proposed Legal Changes
Yurchyshyn emphasized the importance of these legal changes:
"We need to amend the legislation and obligate channels, upon reaching a certain number of users or a specific audience size, to clearly indicate their owners. If this is not done, we should appeal to the Telegram administration to block such channels."The primary risk, according to the lawmaker, is that a high level of anonymity directly correlates with a vast quantity of fake news. The goal of the changes is to make the information field transparent and hold distributors of disinformation accountable.
Yaroslav Yurchyshyn's initiative highlights the Ukrainian government's increasing apprehension about the societal impact of disinformation, particularly within the context of war and political tension. Introducing registration requirements for channels could become a significant step toward ensuring the transparency of information sources and increasing accountability for spreading falsehoods. Telegram's reaction to this proposal and the feasibility of its implementation remain uncertain, which may influence further developments in Ukraine's information landscape.
