Gosstat plans to assess the population size by the end of the year, but the methodology will be different.
Gosstat plans to conduct an assessment of the population size
According to inkorr.com: The State Statistics Service of Ukraine plans to assess the population size by the end of the year. The head of Gosstat, Arsen Makarchuk, noted that this assessment will not fully replace the census, but under the current circumstances, it is the optimal solution.
“We have to conduct this assessment de facto from scratch, when there is no single reliable source that can provide us with data for the assessment,” Makarchuk noted.
Previously, Gosstat relied on data from the 2001 census. However, due to Russia's military aggression, this method has become unsuitable due to the lack of reliable information since 2022.
Using various data sources
Makarchuk also emphasized that information from state registries, data from mobile operators and banks can be used for population assessment while adhering to privacy standards. This will allow for more accurate estimates of the number of residents in the country.
“They know where their clients are, as they can see their transactions in the POS network and record client requests to the branch. There are also, in particular, statistical data on the amount of consumed food products in a certain locality,” explained the head of Gosstat.
The request for population size assessment is one of the most relevant, as this information is important not only for citizens but also for government agencies and businesses. Data on population size, along with GDP and inflation indicators, is critically important for socio-economic calculations.
Accounting for the population size in Ukraine is an important task for the State Statistics Service. Given the current circumstances, it is necessary to seek alternative information sources for accurate assessment. The use of various sources, including data from banks and mobile operators, can significantly improve the determination of the population size.
