Children Forcibly Taken by Russia Return to Kherson Region: The Road to Reintegration.
Ukrainian Children Come Home
According to Espreso.tv: A group of Ukrainian children, aged 3 to 17, who were forcibly deported by Russia, have returned to the Kherson region. They are now undergoing reintegration at centers called 'Hope and Recovery.' Among them is one child who lost parental care. This development is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by Russia's systematic removal of minors from occupied territories.
As of August 2025, authorities have confirmed that at least 19,500 Ukrainian children were illegally taken from temporarily occupied areas into Russia. These actions drew global condemnation, leading the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants in March 2023 for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, both implicated in the deportations.
The Bring Kids Back UA Initiative
In April 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that over 2,100 children had been returned under the Bring Kids Back UA initiative, supported by the charity Save Ukraine. Commenting on the situation, Oleksandr Prokudin stated:
“Each and every one of them endured pressure, threats, and fear because of Russia.” — Oleksandr Prokudin
These events highlight the urgent need to support and protect children who have become victims of war. Reintegrating them into Ukrainian society is a crucial step toward their recovery and return to normal life.
The return of these deported children is not just a humanitarian mission but a vital phase in restoring social justice. The process has drawn significant international attention, underscoring the necessity of safeguarding children's rights and holding those who violate international law accountable. Successful reintegration requires comprehensive approaches, including:
- psychological support
- social adaptation
These are critically important amid the ongoing conflict.
