Attack on the Nevinnomyssky Azot Chemical Plant

According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of March 19, kamikaze drones targeted the Nevinnomyssky Azot chemical plant in Russia’s Stavropol Krai, setting off a series of blasts and igniting a fire. The first air raid alert in the area was issued around 2 a.m. local time. According to FIRMS data, at least four separate hotspots were detected within the plant’s premises. Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the assault, reporting that 28 drones were shot down.

Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov claimed that no critical infrastructure was damaged. However, local authorities noted that several buildings in the city of Nevinnomyssk suffered damage to their facades and windows. The Nevinnomyssky Azot facility is a major industrial player in the region, producing over 1 million tons of ammonia and roughly 1.4 million tons of ammonium nitrate each year.

Broader Military Context

This incident is part of a wider pattern of strikes, as recent attacks have also hit:

  • The 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant in Staraya Russa on March 17
  • The Aviastar aircraft plant in the Ulyanovsk region on March 18

The war in Ukraine is increasingly spilling onto Russian soil, with such events signaling an ongoing escalation of the conflict.

The strike on the Nevinnomyssky Azot plant underscores the growing threat to Russia’s critical infrastructure amid the war in Ukraine. It highlights evolving tactics employed by both sides and could have significant implications for regional security. Given the plant’s importance to the Stavropol economy, similar incidents may carry serious consequences for local residents and industrial output.
