Documentary films about the war in Ukraine on the Oscar-2025 shortlist

Two films about the war in Ukraine - 'Porcelain War' and 'Once Upon a Time in Ukraine' - have been included in the shortlist for the 'Oscar-2025' award. This was reported by the American Film Academy.

'Porcelain War' will compete for the award in the 'Documentary Feature Film' category. The film is a joint project of Ukraine, the USA, and Australia. The directors are Brendan Bellomo from the USA and Ukrainian artist Slava Leontiev.

The film tells the story of three artists from Kharkiv who decided to stay in the frontline city despite the danger. They try to restore the city by making porcelain figurines to decorate the destroyed houses.

Also, in the 'Documentary Short Film' category, the film 'Once Upon a Time in Ukraine' by directors Betsy West and Earl Mac has been included. This film tells the story of children's lives in wartime conditions.

In total, the 'Documentary Feature Film' shortlist includes 15 films, while the 'Documentary Short Film' shortlist includes 14 films. Among them are Ukrainian films as well.

Unfortunately, the film 'La Palisiada' by Filip Sotnichenko did not make it to the shortlist for the 'Best International Feature Film' nomination. However, the Ukrainian film '20 Days in Mariupol' has already won the 'Oscar' in the 'Best Feature Documentary' category. This was a historic moment for cinema in Ukraine.
