Egypt Imposes Strict Power Rationing as Gas Costs Surge Amid Iran Conflict.
Egypt Launches Electricity Reduction Campaign
According to TSN.ua: Egypt has initiated a campaign to cut electricity consumption in response to rising costs for imported gas, a spike triggered by the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. The effort began on March 28, marking a significant step for the nation as it seeks to ease the financial burden on its budget. This move comes as Egypt grapples with the ripple effects of regional instability on its energy sector.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that 'rationing electricity use is a far better option than another increase in fuel prices for the public.'
His remarks underscore the strategy's aim to shield citizens from additional financial strain during this challenging period.
Since the onset of hostilities, Egypt's monthly gas import bill has jumped from $560 million to $1.65 billion, posing a major challenge to the economy. Against the backdrop of a currency devaluation in 2024 and $57 billion in international aid, the government is taking steps to maintain stability.
New Electricity Consumption Rules
As part of the campaign, new regulations for electricity use will be enforced:
- Shopping malls, restaurants, and retail stores must close by 9:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 PM on weekends.
- Illuminated advertising billboards are set to be turned off.
- Street lighting will be reduced to the minimum safe level.
- Government offices will also close at 6:00 PM.
This development highlights the serious economic hurdles Egypt faces, which could have lasting effects on its population. The government is striving to adapt to global shifts in the energy market, impacting the domestic economy and public welfare. The measures reflect a necessary balance between energy needs and economic realities, and may represent just the first step in a long-term strategy to adjust to new energy market conditions.
