The extradition of a Ukrainian in the Nord Stream case has been approved: what does it mean.
The Italian court on Monday, October 27, finally approved the extradition of a Ukrainian suspect to Germany. He is accused of participating in the sabotage of the 'Nord Stream' gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. This decision paves the way for German prosecutors to directly interrogate the suspect in connection with the explosions that destroyed three of the four strands of the pipelines. This was reported by 'Glavkom' referring to DW.
Charges and Arrest
According to inkorr.com: The 'Nord Stream' pipeline has long been considered a symbol of Germany's excessive dependence on Russian fuel.
The man, who according to German privacy laws is identified only as Sergey K., was arrested in August 2025 near the Italian city of Rimini, where he was vacationing with his family. Since then, the Ukrainian has been held in a high-security prison in northern Italy.
Sergey K. is considered one of the suspected organizers of the attacks. The Federal Prosecutor's Office of Germany accuses him of jointly committing an explosion using explosives and of unconstitutional sabotage.
The Importance of the Case
The decision of the Italian court to extradite the Ukrainian to Germany relates to the explosions on the 'Nord Stream' pipelines. After the arrest and the charges, German prosecutors gained the opportunity to interrogate the accused and thoroughly investigate the case. The 'Nord Stream' pipeline continues to be a symbol of Germany's energy dependence on Russia, and this case could significantly impact the security of the gas transportation system in the future.
