EU takes a risky approach to Trump's presidency - Media.
Currently, European diplomats and officials are watching with interest how the newly elected US President, Donald Trump, will implement his promises regarding Europe. In particular, they are interested in his stance on trade and security. Instead of the expected hostile attitude and readiness for military action, European officials are forced to adopt a passive approach. It is clear that the Republican Party's triumph and Trump's victory have increased fears among Europeans, and the EU has something to threaten.
However, despite this, European leaders seek cooperation with the new American administration and prepare for effective interaction. Nevertheless, they are aware that the new government will be more hostile to European interests and may become even more threatening. Therefore, despite Trump's promises, Ukraine's allies remain concerned.
However, security is not the only concern for European officials and diplomats. The EU is facing a crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war against Ukraine, and is dealing with possible trade tariffs that Trump has promised to impose on European goods. Scientists warn that these actions could lead to a recession in the EU and significant economic losses.
Thus, the EU is taking an observational stance towards Trump. Officials are analyzing possible scenarios and preparing for them but do not wish to publish them so as not to worsen their position during negotiations. The EU's shift towards greater independence in defense and security areas particularly worries Paris. Therefore, maintaining the unity of the Union under such conditions could prove to be a difficult task.
Moreover, the formation of a new European Commission and the upcoming elections in Berlin complicate the situation. It will not be easy to convince Berlin to increase spending on common European finances and military aid to Ukraine, which poses a threat to the EU's security.
