EU Commits €200 Million to Small Nuclear Reactors, Signaling a Major Shift in Energy Policy.
Announcement at Nuclear Energy Summit
According to UATV: At a nuclear energy summit held in Paris on March 10, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared the need for a significant shift in Europe's nuclear policy. She announced a €200 million investment to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), highlighting the critical need for global innovation in this sector. This move comes as Europe seeks to reassert its leadership in advanced energy technologies and reduce its historical reliance on fossil fuels.
Von der Leyen stated that
"the nuclear race is in full swing"and emphasized that Europe possesses all the necessary resources to become a frontrunner in nuclear energy development. She pointed out that in 1990, nuclear power generated one-third of Europe's electricity, whereas today it accounts for only about 15%. This decline underscores the scale of the challenge and opportunity for a nuclear revival.
Poland's Stated Position
Poland, which is actively developing its own nuclear capabilities, confirmed its ambitions at the summit. Polish leader Donald Tusk stressed that
"Poland has no intention of remaining passive in developing its nuclear potential". The summit thus marked a pivotal moment for discussing the future of atomic energy in Europe and the potential for its resurgence as a cornerstone of the continent's energy security strategy.
The significance of these initiatives lies in Europe's drive to cut its dependence on fossil fuels and refocus on reviving nuclear power as a key component in ensuring energy security. Updating nuclear policy is seen as a way to stabilize energy supplies and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the region.
