EU Warns Washington Against Pressuring Ukraine to Cede Territory: Remarks from Kallas.
European Union Raises Alarm
According to TSN.ua: During a G7 meeting in France on Thursday, the European Union voiced its concern over potential U.S. pressure on Ukraine to make territorial concessions in negotiations with Russia. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas strongly rejected such demands, stating that
“demanding a country give up its legitimate lands in exchange for peace or security guarantees is absolutely unacceptable”(Kaja Kallas). This statement underscores the EU's firm stance on preserving Ukraine's sovereignty.
Ukrainian President's Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed the matter, noting that the U.S. is linking security guarantees to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas. He emphasized that
“such a scenario is extremely dangerous and creates enormous security risks not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe”(Volodymyr Zelenskyy). The Kremlin, in turn, welcomed Zelenskyy's remarks about U.S. conditions on security guarantees, which has further alarmed the international community.
These discussions at the G7 summit highlight the urgent and complex situation facing Ukraine, as well as the critical need for international support to uphold its territorial integrity and security. The ongoing crisis in Ukraine remains a top priority for global leaders, as any potential territorial concessions could significantly destabilize the region and undermine trust in international security commitments.
