Western Powers Target Russia's 'Shadow Fleet': France and Britain Seize Tanker 'Grinch'.
Tanker 'Grinch' Seized in Joint Operation
According to UATV: In a coordinated move, France and the United Kingdom have detained the oil tanker 'Grinch', a vessel belonging to Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet', in the Mediterranean Sea. The sanctioned tanker, which was carrying crude oil, was subjected to inspections by prosecutors. This action follows calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for stronger measures against Russian oil shipments.
The tanker 'Grinch', sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands, was intercepted on January 22, 2023, in waters between southern Spain and northern Morocco. It had originally departed from Murmansk, Russia, in early January 2023. The vessel had been placed on sanctions lists by the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom in the summer of 2022.
A Broader Campaign Against Sanctions Evasion
This seizure is part of a wider international campaign to clamp down on Russia's shadow fleet, which is used to circumvent Western sanctions on its oil exports. In a parallel action on the same day, January 22, 2023, the United States detained the oil tanker 'Sagitta' in the Caribbean Sea. Earlier that month, on January 15, U.S. forces captured the tanker 'Veronica', and on January 7, they seized the Russian vessel 'Bella 1' in the North Atlantic. By January 2023, U.S. military forces were involved in at least seven known interdictions of shadow fleet ships.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that the operation was conducted in conjunction with allies. A spokesperson for U.S. Southern Command emphasized that 'the detention of yet another tanker demonstrates our resolve to ensure sanctions enforcement.'
“It's the only language they understand.”

The actions by France, Britain, and the United States highlight concerted Western efforts to counter Russian aggression and illicit oil trade. The detention of the 'Grinch' marks a significant step within this strategy. These measures underscore international solidarity in opposing sanctions evasion and could impact regional dynamics, including European energy security. For maximum effect, such enforcement actions must be systematic and sustained until full compliance with international norms and sanctions is achieved.
