Russia has transferred control over science to the FSB: what this means for the world.
Starting from September 1, 2025, a law has come into effect in Russia that transfers full control over international scientific cooperation to the Federal Security Service. According to the new law, all civil scientific research involving foreign scientists or organizations must obtain permission from the FSB. This was reported by 'Glavkom', citing the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.
According to inkorr.com: The new law has caused real outrage among Russian scientists. Now any publication in international scientific journals can be interpreted as an attempt to 'transfer information to a foreign state'. This creates conditions for increased censorship and paranoia among researchers, turning science into another sphere of strict control by the special services.
- Creation of own centers for holding suspects until trial.
- Permission for foreign vessels to enter Russian ports only with FSB consent.
This year, the powers of the FSB regarding control over scientific research and other aspects have also been expanded, with the aim of strengthening internal control and creating threats to other countries.
Cyber specialists have uncovered another Russian agent in Ukraine
Cyber specialists from the Security Service discovered another representative of Russia in Kyiv. The individual was collecting data on the protective system of administrative buildings of the Armed Forces in the capital of Ukraine. SBU officials caught her 'in the act' while she was conducting reconnaissance near the Main Directorate of the National Guard. This was reported by 'Glavkom', citing the SBU press service.
The new legislation in Russia regarding the control of scientific cooperation raises concerns among scientists, as it increases the level of censorship and pressure in the scientific field. In addition, the detention of the Russian agent in Ukraine indicates the continuation of active measures against foreign espionage and the protection of national security.
