Rutte on Trump: only he can make Putin sit at the negotiating table.
According to ТСН: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that the only one who can make Russian President Vladimir Putin sit at the negotiating table to end the war against Ukraine is US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with the German publication Bild, Rutte added that Trump 'is fully focused on ending this war.' He also emphasized the importance of compromises to achieve peace, although he did not specify who exactly should concede.
The NATO Secretary General assured that concerns regarding a possible cessation of support for Ukraine from Trump are unfounded. He noted that the US would remain committed to NATO, so European countries would not be left alone in the event of a threat from Russia.
Russia's losses and the situation on the front
Rutte emphasized that Putin is willing to sacrifice 1.1 million of his citizens, achieving only minor successes this year. According to NATO estimates, Russia controls less than 1% of Ukrainian territory, while during this period up to 1.1 million people have been killed or injured. Monthly losses of the Russian army amount to about 25,000 people.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
In Rutte's opinion, to deter Putin from further attacks, three key measures must be taken:
The Armed Forces of Ukraine must be in excellent shape;
The 'Coalition of the Willing' led by France and the UK (with the participation of Germany and other allies), which will provide everything necessary to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
The USA, which, according to Rutte and Trump, plan to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine.
Rutte also reminded that a number of European countries have agreed to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, and allies are currently discussing the concept of their deployment and actions on the ground, at sea, and in the air within the coalition.
Rutte's comments underline the importance of supporting Ukraine at the international level and the allies' readiness for active action in the fight against Russian aggression. We hope this will ensure stability in the region and keep paths open for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
