Giant Catfish in Vinnytsia Region: Fishermen Caught a Two-Meter Fish.
According to inkorr.com: In Bershad, located in Vinnytsia, a fisherman caught a huge catfish nearly two meters long - a true rarity for local waters. This was reported by
Glavkomreferencing the State Agency of Melioration and Fisheries of Ukraine.
"In the town of Bershad in Vinnytsia region, a fisherman was lucky to catch a giant catfish in the Dohany River," the agency's information states.
Enormous Fish
The size of this catfish can be compared to the height of an adult human, making it one of the largest catches in the region in recent times.
A Moment of Pride for Fishermen
This find has become a true pride for local fishermen; such trophies prove that river giants still exist in Ukrainian waters. It emphasizes that the skill and luck of the fishermen deserve recognition.
The European catfish is not only the largest freshwater fish in Ukraine and Europe but also one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet. Its length can reach 5 meters, and its weight can exceed 100 kg. In Ukraine, these predators inhabit the basins of all rivers, the agency noted.
Similar Catch Events
It is worth reminding that in Lviv region, a fisherman caught several giant sturgeons weighing up to 30 kg. This successful catch occurred at a sports lake, accessible only by special invitations. Over two days, fishermen caught two carp and five sturgeons, each weighing from 25 to 30 kg.
Changes in Aquatic Ecosystems
Ichthyologist from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Yulia Kutsokoni, in an interview with "Glavkom," explained that the artificial alteration of river courses in the 20th century, particularly the construction of dams and creation of ponds, significantly changed the living conditions for freshwater fish in Ukraine. Indigenous species, such as the golden crucian carp, face habitat loss, while invasive fish such as the bullhead and Amur catfish begin to dominate in the waters.
A rare event occurred in the fishing community of Bershad - a giant catfish found its way into fishermen's nets. This catch amazed even experienced anglers, highlighting that Ukrainian waters still conceal true river giants. Such successful catches indicate a high level of skill and luck among fishermen and confirm the possible restoration of the fish population in national waters.
