Greece is reforming its army: salaries will increase by 24%, women will be invited to serve.
According to inkorr.com: The Greek Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias presented a detailed plan for reforms in military personnel on September 30, 2025. The bill provides for changes in ranks, salaries, education, conscription, as well as the possibility of voluntary service for women. This information was published by 'Glavkom', referring to greekcitytimes.com.
Main changes and incentives
- Voluntary service for women: For the first time, women aged 20 to 26 will have the opportunity to serve voluntarily for 12 months. This will positively influence their further employment in the public sector, as service is recognized as professional experience.
- Salary increase: A new salary system with increased allowances will be introduced. The average salary growth for military personnel is expected to be between 13% and 24%.
- New hierarchy and promotion: A new rank system and promotion mechanisms will be established.
The term of mandatory service will remain at 12 months, or 9 months for servicemen serving in border areas or special military units.
Compensation for conscripts in frontline positions will rise from 8.80 euros to 100 euros per month. The training process will be improved by the introduction of combat simulators, drone operators, and specialized skills. There are also plans to modernize reserve forces and create an active reserve of 150,000 people, and the reserve service term will be extended to 60 years.
It was previously reported that Greece would not provide military guarantees to Ukraine but would continue to support it in diplomatic, humanitarian, and financial spheres.
In September 2025, the Greek Minister of Defense again confirmed plans to reform the country's armed forces. Changes encompass various aspects of military service, including voluntary service for women, salary increases, a new hierarchy, and a modern training process. Greece will continue to support Ukraine but will not provide military assistance. These innovations aim to improve the effectiveness and readiness of the armed forces in a changing geopolitical environment.
This step demonstrates Greece's efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and adapt its national armed forces to modern challenges. The implemented changes, especially regarding voluntary service for women, could significantly alter the structure of military personnel, which in turn will impact professional development and the integration of women into the military sphere.
