Kharkiv's Underground Classrooms: How 20,000 Children Attend School in the Metro.
Education in Kharkiv: New Challenges and Solutions
According to Novyny.live: In Kharkiv, nearly 20,000 children, representing 38% of the city's student population, are now attending classes in eight underground schools for their safety. The first such school opened in 2024, followed by six more in 2025, with an eighth facility launching in January 2026. This innovative approach to education has become a necessity for the city, which has faced significant security threats.
Kharkiv currently operates 21 secure educational centers where children can continue their studies in safety-compliant conditions. To accommodate the large number of pupils, these schools run on a two-shift system. The city's metro system has been repurposed to host these unique learning environments, with seven stations now housing underground educational hubs.
"Kharkiv's education system is an integral part of the unbreakable spirit of Kharkiv."
Olga Demenko, representative of educational structures
She further emphasized that 'These are real schools, just underground,' noting the scale of the initiative. This demonstrates a highly adaptive and innovative approach to maintaining education as a priority, even under extreme circumstances where child safety is paramount.
The establishment of these subterranean schools highlights the education system's remarkable adaptation to the severe security challenges facing the city. In the context of ongoing conflict and persistent threats, these facilities have become an essential, rather than merely an alternative, means of providing a secure learning environment. This effort underscores the commitment of local authorities and educational bodies to sustain the educational process despite the extraordinary conditions.
