Kharkiv's Metro System

According to Novyny.live: Beyond its 30 public stations, the Kharkiv Metro system conceals a network of secret underground bunkers. The most notable is a government bunker located beneath the 'Universitet' station. Constructed during the Soviet era, this 300 to 500 square meter facility is secured by 8-ton armored doors. Additionally, a secret area spanning several thousand square meters exists under the metro administration building. These hidden spaces are a stark reminder of the Cold War era, when metro systems were often designed with dual civilian and military purposes.

Station Renaming and Expansion Plans

In 2024, several metro stations underwent name changes. The station 'Pushkinska' was renamed 'Yaroslav Mudryi'. Later that summer, the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration approved further renamings for three more stations:

  • 'Prospekt Gagarina' to 'Levada'
  • 'Heroiv Pratsi' to 'Saltivska'
  • 'Zavod imeni Malysheva' to 'Zavodska'

Alongside these updates, the metro is set for physical expansion. The first tenders for new stations are scheduled to begin in February 2024. This combination of renaming and expansion reflects an ongoing effort to modernize Kharkiv's vital public transport network, which serves as a crucial artery for the city's residents. The planned developments aim to improve connectivity, while the existence of the bunkers underscores the metro's historical role as a strategic asset for civil defense.
