Guidance for Staying Safe in Unheated Homes

According to TSN.ua: Due to Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, many cities, including Kyiv, continue to face unreliable heating and electricity. This has left residents coping with dangerously cold apartments during severe winter weather. The Ministry of Health and physician Bohdan Smalia offer crucial advice on staying warm and avoiding hypothermia.

Expert Recommendations for Layering Clothes

Experts advise wearing at least three layers of clothing when indoor temperatures are between 14°C and 15°C. If the temperature in your home drops to around 10°C, you should wear four layers to maintain comfort and body heat. The most effective insulating materials include:

  • Wool
  • Fleece
  • Down
  • Thermal underwear

These materials provide excellent thermal insulation. It is critical to recognize that hypothermia poses a serious life-threatening risk. When a person's body temperature falls to 34°C - 36°C, immediate warming is required. A body temperature below 34°C constitutes a medical emergency requiring hospitalization. Therefore, knowing the difference between simply feeling cold and clinical hypothermia is vital.

Those trying to keep warm should be aware that alcohol is not an effective solution. It does not warm the body and instead increases the risk of hypothermia. Caution is also needed regarding carbon monoxide poisoning, which can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.

Proper nutrition can also help in the fight against the cold. Consuming warm meals and drinks boosts overall energy levels and aids in maintaining body heat. By following these guidelines and understanding how to respond to hypothermia, residents can reduce the risk of dangerous outcomes during cold winter days.

The energy situation in Ukraine remains critical as Russian strikes on infrastructure continue to disrupt daily life for millions. With dropping temperatures and a lack of reliable heating, adhering to medical advice is essential to prevent hypothermia. This winter poses unique challenges, making proactive personal safety measures more important than ever for vulnerable populations.
