Five Major Military Defeats in Russian History, According to Andriy Illarionov.
Russia’s Historical Setbacks
According to TSN.ua: In an episode of the 'Moseichuk Podcast,' Andriy Illarionov outlined several instances where Russia suffered significant military losses across different eras. He emphasized that even nations not considered global powers have managed to secure victories or maintain their independence against Russian forces. Among the examples he cited was the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, which concluded with the Treaty of Portsmouth and resulted in considerable territorial and strategic concessions for Russia.
Illarionov also highlighted the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian wars of independence fought between 1919 and 1920. Following the collapse of the Russian Empire, these Baltic states successfully asserted their sovereignty. Another key case mentioned was the Soviet-Polish War from 1919 to 1921, a conflict that saw Poland re-establish its statehood after gaining independence in 1918.
Key Conflicts and Their Outcomes
Additionally, the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland in 1939–1940 served as another stark example of Russian military struggle. Illarionov noted that the United Kingdom and France had prepared to send troops to aid Finland, underscoring the international dimension of that confrontation.
The Soviet-Afghan War, which lasted nine years and claimed the lives of approximately 15,000 Soviet soldiers, cannot be overlooked. This conflict became a symbol of failure for the Soviet army, as its efforts ultimately failed to bring stability to the region.
“These examples show that states which were not great powers were able to achieve victories or secure their independence and sovereignty.”
Andriy Illarionov
Illarionov’s discussion also referenced Donald Trump’s remark that 'Russia supposedly defeated Napoleon and Hitler,' illustrating how historical narratives can vary widely depending on perspective.
These historical facts demonstrate that Russia has not always been successful in military conflicts, while countries striving for independence have often achieved their goals despite facing a militarily superior adversary.
This examination of Russia’s military defeats by Andriy Illarionov underscores the value of studying the past to better understand contemporary geopolitical dynamics. History reveals that even the most powerful states can suffer setbacks in armed conflicts, while smaller nations possess the potential to defend their independence. This context is particularly relevant amid ongoing international tensions and conflicts where Russia may continue to encounter challenges.
