Ukrainian Pensions to Increase in March: Details on the 12.1% Rise and Who Qualifies.
Pension Indexation in Ukraine for March 2023
According to TSN.ua: In March 2023, Ukrainian state pensions will be indexed by 12.1%. This increase, announced by Minister of Social Policy Denys Ulutin, will see payments rise by amounts ranging from 100 to 2,595 hryvnias, depending on an individual's length of service and current benefit level. The adjustment takes effect on March 1, 2023, and will apply to the vast majority of retirees. This annual adjustment is a key mechanism to help pensions keep pace with inflation and living costs.
Changes to Pension Amounts
Under the new rules, the minimum pension for non-working retirees will increase from 3,038 hryvnias to 3,406 hryvnias. The maximum pensionable amount will remain unchanged at 25,950 hryvnias. It is important to note that this indexation does not apply to certain groups of pensioners, specifically:
- Pensioners already receiving the maximum payment;
- Retired prosecutors and judges.
Compared to previous years, the 2023 indexation rate of 12.1% is higher than the 11.5% applied in 2022, though a smaller increase of less than 8% is planned for 2024. Minister Ulutin also stated that the precise average pension amount will only be determined after the recalculations from the indexation are complete. These adjustments are being implemented amid ongoing economic pressures following Russia's full-scale invasion.
Consequently, the March indexation represents a significant step in supporting the financial well-being of Ukrainian pensioners, even though it does not cover all population groups. The raise is crucial for many who depend on these payments, particularly given the current economic challenges. Public reaction to the changes is expected to be mixed, considering that some pensioner categories will not see an increase. Overall, these measures are likely to influence short-term social stability within Ukraine.
