Iran convenes emergency National Security Council meeting amid rumors of Hezbollah leader's elimination by Israeli airstrike.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei convenes a meeting in connection with Israel's strike on Beirut
Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council at his residence.
According to two Iranian officials who are aware of the meeting, it is being held in response to Israel's strike on Beirut, which targeted Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
This information came after Israel carried out a large-scale strike on Hezbollah's headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut. According to Israeli and American sources, the target of the attack was Nasrallah.
Israeli journalist Ben Caspit reported that Nasrallah was allegedly killed in the strike. However, Arab media claim he is alive and in a safe place. There is currently no official confirmation of this information.
According to Israeli officials, the decision on the possibility of eliminating Nasrallah was discussed as early as Wednesday, before Prime Minister Netanyahu's trip to New York. It was decided to wait for an opportune moment, which came on Friday.
The strike on Beirut occurred shortly after Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly, where he stated the necessity of defeating Hezbollah for Israel's survival.
According to Lebanon's Ministry of Health, at least two people were killed and 76 injured in the strikes. Lebanon's Health Minister Firas Abiad warned that the death toll may rise as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
