Justice Conference Held in Kyiv

According to UATV: On February 23, Kyiv hosted the Justice Conference, a major gathering where Ukrainian officials and foreign delegations focused on three critical paths to justice: holding Russia accountable for its aggression, securing reparations for Ukraine's reconstruction, and repatriating thousands of abducted children. This event underscores the international legal efforts underway since the full-scale invasion began.

Conference participants reviewed extensive evidence of crimes committed by Russia. The International Criminal Court has already issued six arrest warrants for Russian war criminals, including President Vladimir Putin. In a related move, the European Union has allocated 10 million euros to launch the work of a Special Tribunal aimed at prosecuting those responsible.

The Plight of Abducted Children

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has deported 19,546 Ukrainian children; over four years, Ukraine has managed to bring back only 2,003. This dire situation has prompted urgent calls to action from Ukrainian officials. Kyrylo Budanov emphasized this point, stating:

“The key to justice for Kyiv is the Ukrainian army.”

The tragic human cost was further highlighted, with reports that the Russian army has killed 685 children and injured over 2,000 more, illustrating the profound impact of the aggression on civilians.

The participation of Olena Zelenska was also pivotal. She stressed that “the Russians took our children from the occupied territories in entire orphanages,” pointing to the systematic nature of these human rights violations. Andrii Sybiha reinforced the need for consequences, stating:

“There will be no lasting peace without punishing the guilty.”

Discussions also turned to the monumental task of rebuilding, with the total cost of Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction estimated at approximately $588 billion. This staggering figure reflects the scale of destruction the country faces. Commenting on the broader pursuit of accountability, Mark Ellis noted:

  • “We will not allow impunity for those responsible for gross human rights violations.”

The Justice Conference ultimately underscored the vital importance of international solidarity and accountability in confronting aggression, as well as the necessity of protecting human rights and securing justice for the Ukrainian people. It served as a significant step toward global recognition of the situation in Ukraine and highlighted the crucial need for international support in matters of justice and recovery. By discussing not only the problems but also potential solutions, the conference demonstrated active engagement on the international stage to address the profound challenges Ukraine faces, which require consolidated efforts both domestically and globally.
