Court Rules Mother Legally Insane
According to TSN.ua: The Kalush City-District Court has ruled that the mother of three-year-old Alina Petriv was legally insane when she killed her child and has ordered her to undergo forced psychiatric treatment. The court's decision, handed down on February 17, 2023, followed a lengthy investigation that determined the girl was drowned. The tragedy occurred in June 2025 in the city of Kalush, located in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of western Ukraine. During the trial, it was confirmed that the woman committed a socially dangerous act, with the characteristics of Part 2, Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, while in a state of legal insanity. The court applied compulsory measures, ordering her hospitalization to a facility providing psychiatric care under strict supervision. The child's cause of death was determined to be mechanical asphyxiation.
The mother was initially detained on suspicion of murder. The court, considering all the circumstances of the case, ultimately ruled for her treatment, while also acknowledging the gravity of the act. This case has provoked significant public discussion, underscoring the critical importance of mental health and its impact on criminal responsibility.
Reflections on Mental Health and Justice
