Heating Crisis Hits Kyiv Schools

According to TSN.ua: Pupils and teachers in Kyiv are facing a severe heating crisis in their schools. Following attacks on the TEC-4 power plant on February 12, 2023, the capital's central heating was cut off, causing classroom temperatures to plummet. Currently, temperatures in educational facilities range from 0°C to a mere 3°C (32°F to 37°F). In some cases, with the use of portable heaters, it is possible to raise the temperature to 10°C or even 14°C (50°F to 57°F). This situation is part of the wider impact on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure from ongoing hostilities.

Despite these harsh conditions, officials announced the resumption of in-person schooling on February 15, 2023. In schools in the Dniprovskyi district, classroom temperatures were reported to be only 7°C (45°F), raising significant alarm among parents and educators. Serhiy Chumak, Kyiv's Chief State Sanitary Doctor, emphasized that the air temperature in schools should be maintained between 17°C and 20°C (63°F to 68°F).

Growing Alarm from Parents and Staff

Teachers have voiced deep concerns about attempting to educate children under such circumstances.

"My second-graders simply cannot learn in these conditions," said one anonymous teacher.
Parents have also expressed their frustration.
"The schools were not provided with generators or mobile boiler units," stated Olga, a student's mother.
Another mother, Hanna, called the situation absurd, remarking, "This is absolute nonsense."

Official health and safety regulations mandate that classroom temperatures must not fall below 17–20°C. The current crisis jeopardizes both the health and the educational comfort of children, as adhering to these standards is critical for providing a proper learning environment.

The heating failure in Kyiv's schools highlights the broader vulnerabilities in Ukraine's energy infrastructure during wartime. The lack of adequate conditions for learning threatens educational quality and the overall well-being of students. Authorities and educational institutions must urgently find solutions to improve the situation and ensure a safe, comfortable environment for pupils.
