Kyiv Metro to Add Thousands of Folding Chairs to Bomb Shelter Stations.
Kyiv Metro's Folding Chair Procurement Plan
According to Novyny.live: Kyiv's metro system is preparing to purchase 4,460 folding chairs to provide additional seating for people sheltering during air raid alerts. This initiative aims to improve the comfort and safety of the thousands who rely on the metro's underground stations as bomb shelters. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, these stations have become a critical part of the city's civilian defense infrastructure.
The procurement will be conducted through a public tendering system. In 2023, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) already supplied the metro with over 10,000 folding chairs. Currently, only about 2,400 of those chairs remain, indicating they are actively used during frequent air raid warnings.
Enhancing Shelter Conditions During Alerts
All 46 underground stations in the Kyiv metro network operate as 24/7 shelters, making them a vital component of the capital's safety system. The purchase of additional chairs is intended to provide greater comfort for passengers during critical situations when the metro becomes a temporary refuge. This effort is part of a broader strategy to upgrade shelter infrastructure across the city.
Ensuring reasonable comfort during prolonged air raids is an important aspect of supporting the psychological well-being of a population facing constant threat. The procurement of new chairs reflects a growing societal need for both safety and basic amenities during these extreme circumstances.
