Matching Dog Breeds to Owner Activity Levels

According to TSN.ua: Canine specialist Andriy Dolzhenko has emphasized how crucial it is to select a dog breed that aligns with the owner's activity level. He points out that choosing a four-legged companion should go beyond physical traits and take emotional well-being into account. A dog may be in perfect physical health yet still suffer emotionally, which can negatively affect its behavior.

Four Signs of Stress in Dogs

Dolzhenko identified four key indicators of stress in dogs:

  • behavioral changes;
  • decreased activity;
  • excessive avoidance of contact;
  • signs of nervousness.

If these behavioral shifts occur regularly, seeking advice from a professional is recommended. The expert also noted that breed size does not always predict energy levels.

“Some large dogs are very slow, while some small ones are extremely energetic,” says Andriy Dolzhenko.

Additionally, Dolzhenko stressed that owners must manage their dog's behavior carefully. He advises avoiding sudden movements and shouting to prevent scaring the animal or people nearby.

“The owner should control the dog's behavior, avoiding abrupt motions and yelling so as not to frighten the pet or passersby,” he stated.

For owners with active hobbies—such as jogging, cycling, fishing, or hunting—Dolzhenko encourages choosing a dog that can join in these activities.

“If jogging, cycling, fishing, or hunting is one of your hobbies, then feel free to pick a pet that matches that lifestyle,” Dolzhenko concluded.

Selecting a breed suited to the owner's daily routine is increasingly important, as it directly affects the quality of life for both the dog and its human. Recognizing the signs of stress in dogs also highlights the need for attentive care and emotional responsibility. Factoring this in when choosing a dog helps ensure a comfortable and harmonious life together.
