Georgian Legion Commander on Mandatory Service for Foreigners: Who Truly Wants to Fight.
Mamuka Mamulashvili's Remarks on Mandatory Contract Service for Foreigners
According to Novyny.live: Mamuka Mamulashvili, commander of the volunteer 'Georgian Legion' battalion, has responded to a proposal by Denys Yaroslavskyi to introduce a mandatory six-month contract service for foreigners in Ukraine. This initiative seeks to formalize the role of international volunteers in the country's defense. Mamulashvili stated that all foreigners with a genuine desire to fight for Ukraine have already joined the conflict.
During a broadcast of 'Rank.LIVE' on January 29, Mamulashvili suggested that a mandatory service scheme might appeal to those seeking to test themselves in a military environment, as
"a person would have a clear understanding of exactly how long they would serve"- Mamuka Mamulashvili. He argued this could attract more individuals who are genuinely eager to prove themselves in combat.
The commander also emphasized that all willing volunteers, both Georgian and non-Georgian, are welcome to join his battalion. This statement highlights the unit's ongoing openness to international fighters committed to supporting Ukraine's struggle. The Georgian Legion has been a notable component of Ukraine's foreign volunteer forces since 2014.
Growing Focus on International Participation in Combat
The proposal for mandatory foreign contract service reflects a broader discussion about the role of international volunteers in the war with Russia. Engaging foreigners is seen by some as a potential factor in strengthening the nation's defensive capabilities.
Simultaneously, Mamulashvili's declaration of readiness to accept volunteers underscores the continued importance of international solidarity for Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty.
