Discharge and Deferment Options for Contract Soldiers in Ukraine’s Armed Forces

According to Novyny.live: Service members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who are younger than 25 and signed a contract during the full-scale war are eligible for discharge. They may apply for a one-year deferment, provided they meet specific requirements. This information is crucial for those currently serving and planning their next steps.

Young soldiers who entered into a contract after February 24, 2022, can leave the military once their agreement ends. It is important to note that mobilized troops remain in service until general demobilization, which may affect their discharge options.

Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolutions

On April 8, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 467, which governs a one-year deferment for individuals aged 18 to 25.

Yuriy Ayvazyan stated: 'Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No. 467 is a resolution from April 8, 2026, and it concerns a separate deferment for persons aged 18 to 25 who were accepted for military service under a one-year contract.'

Another resolution, No. 768 from June 12, 2026, provides a six-month deferment after discharge for contracts signed after February 24, 2022.

Ayvazyan added: 'This rule should apply to a three-year contract, provided other conditions are also met simultaneously.'

Starting November 1, 2025, Ukraine implemented an updated system for applying for and extending deferments from mobilization. This change is expected to simplify procedures for young service members seeking deferment or discharge.

Therefore, soldiers under 25 who signed a contract during the full-scale war have certain opportunities to obtain discharge and arrange deferments, as long as they follow the established conditions.

These reforms highlight the Ukrainian government’s efforts to support young service members during the challenging wartime period. They introduce flexibility in managing military service and could boost morale by allowing young people to plan their futures while fulfilling their duties. It is vital that all service members are aware of these conditions and can use them when needed.
