Pandemic Response Agreement: What is Happening?
Member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) secured a majority of votes to adopt the pandemic response agreement during the 78th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva.
124 member countries voted in favor of the agreement, none voted against. Some countries abstained from voting. A qualified majority of 83 votes was needed for the agreement to be adopted. Specifically, the agreement was supported by countries such as Israel, Iran, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Slovakia.
According to the draft agreement, member countries committed to establishing a system for access to pathogens and sharing related benefits. It also includes support for knowledge and technology transfer for the production of medical goods related to pandemics, as well as the establishment of a financial coordination mechanism to assist developing countries.
