Orthopedic Doctor in Kropyvnytskyi Caught in Bribery Scheme
According to Novyny.live: An orthopedic doctor from Kropyvnytskyi, who served on a military medical commission, has been convicted for accepting a bribe. The court delivered its verdict in the case on February 5. In 2024, the doctor was employed at the Kirovohrad Regional Hospital, where he became the subject of a criminal investigation.
This case highlights ongoing anti-corruption efforts within Ukraine's public institutions, including its healthcare system. In July, a serviceman approached the doctor due to a deterioration in his health. The doctor subsequently produced a forged certificate declaring the serviceman unfit for military duty, which formed the basis for the criminal charges. In December, the doctor accepted 16,000 hryvnias for the falsified document, an act that led directly to his arrest and prosecution.
Court Verdict and Penalties
As a result of the trial, the doctor was fined 20,400 hryvnias. Additionally, he was ordered to pay nearly 16,000 hryvnias to cover the cost of a forensic examination. The bail set in this case amounted to 121,120 hryvnias.
This incident underscores the critical need to uphold ethical standards in medical practice, a necessity made even more urgent during wartime, which places immense strain on the healthcare system. Combating corruption remains a key priority in Ukraine, and cases like this serve as a stark warning to other medical professionals about the severe legal consequences of breaking the law.
