The doctor named the most powerful shield against the flu: it's not pills, but ordinary sleep.
Sleep is the key to health
According to ТСН: Family doctor Sophie Newton emphasized that one of the best ways to protect oneself from colds, flu, and seasonal viruses is not supplements or special procedures, but simply quality nighttime sleep. She noted that good rest acts as a natural defense for the body and significantly lowers the risk of infections.
The doctor referred to a study where volunteers were consciously exposed to the cold virus. It turned out that people who sleep less than seven hours a day get sick three times more often. Disrupted or superficial sleep increases the likelihood of developing symptoms almost five and a half times, regardless of age, stress, weight, and alcohol consumption.
According to Newton, during sleep, the immune system actively produces cytokines, forms protective cells, and antibodies. If the body does not receive enough rest, it cannot produce enough "defenders," allowing viruses to attack. The doctor recommends adhering to a schedule, reducing gadget use before sleep, keeping a cool temperature in the bedroom, and adding at least 15-30 minutes for additional rest.
In conclusion, the doctor emphasized: good sleep is important not only for preventing colds but also for improving mental health, memory, and overall well-being.
Getting rid of sleep problems
Another specialist, Dr. Suraj Kukadia, explained which sleeping positions to avoid. He stated that sleeping on the stomach can lead to costochondritis — inflammation at the junction of the ribs and the breastbone. Constant pressure on the chest, combined with poor posture or lifting heavy objects during the day, increases the risk of developing this painful condition.
According to experts, strengthening immunity in winter is easier than it seems. For this, winter nutrition should be rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega-3.
In summary, it is important to pay attention to the importance of healthy sleep in supporting immunity, especially during the cold season. By following simple recommendations, anyone can significantly reduce the risk of getting sick. By ensuring quality rest, we strengthen our health and improve our well-being in the cold season.
