Frenchman skied on sand at 121 km/h: broke the world record.
According to ТСН: French athlete Maë Freidie set a new world speed record for sand skiing, reaching a speed of 121 km/h on the Toro Mata dune in Peru. This is faster than many cars driving on the highway.
According to the Guinness World Records, the extreme skier descended on regular skis, and during such a high-speed descent, the soles of his equipment began to melt.
Freidie surpassed the previous record, which had stood for over 15 years, set by an athlete from Namibia. After his successful descent, he noted that this achievement was the result of months of training, including special preparation on sand, which helped him adapt to the unstable surface.
About the athlete
23-year-old Maë is a former alpine skier from the French Savoy. Last year he tried sand skiing for the first time in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Impressed by this experience, he decided to turn his passion into a record-breaking project.
Record descent
The athlete made the record descent early in the morning on September 25, in the presence of witnesses and a film crew. At maximum speed, he felt the skis heating up from friction, so he quickly stabilized his body and safely braked, avoiding a fall.
Despite moments of danger, radar and video recording confirmed the speed of 121 km/h. After that, Freidie's team organized a celebration. The athlete described his project as a 'combination of performance, innovation, and exploration of new environments'.
This record not only highlights the uniqueness of the athlete's achievements but also opens up new horizons for the development of extreme sports. We hope that his success inspires other athletes to achieve new milestones in unusual conditions.
