Lviv to Offer Free Public Transport to Military Pensioners and Survivors.
Lviv Approves New Transport Benefits
According to Novyny.live: The Lviv City Council has voted to provide free public transport to military pensioners and individuals who have lost their primary breadwinner. This local initiative is a significant step, as these groups are not included in the national list of categories eligible for such state benefits.
Eligibility and Scope of the Benefit
The benefit applies to military personnel retired due to length of service and to persons aged 60 and over who receive a survivor's pension. Eligible residents will receive a 'LeoCard' pass, granting 60 free trips per month on municipal transport. The Lviv community is home to approximately 8,000 military pensioners and a similar number of people receiving a survivor's pension.
This municipal subsidy was created because these groups cannot obtain a national-level transport pass.
“Military pensioners and registered survivors within the Lviv community are not on the state list for transport benefits. Consequently, they had no way to get a subsidized 'LeoCard' and use public transport for free. This is an additional benefit the city is introducing for them,” stated Oleg Zabarilo.
The benefit cards will become active on March 1, 2026, and are exclusively for community residents aged 60 and above. This move by the city council aims to improve living conditions for these groups by ensuring their access to free public transportation. This policy comes as many Ukrainian cities seek ways to support vulnerable populations during the ongoing war.
The introduction of these travel concessions in Lviv marks a crucial move toward broader social support for vulnerable groups. It could serve as a model for other Ukrainian cities considering additional aid for military retirees and those facing difficult life circumstances. Providing such benefits underscores the local government's commitment to supporting its residents through challenging times.
