Kharkiv Region Targeted in Major Assault on Energy and Civilians
According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of February 3, Russian forces launched a sustained, nearly six-hour assault on the city of Kharkiv and its surrounding region. The attack, which involved ballistic missiles, guided aerial bombs, and kamikaze drones, targeted energy infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and significant destruction. This is part of a broader Russian strategy to cripple Ukraine's power grid, especially during the harsh winter months.
According to reports, the following munitions were launched against the Kharkiv region:
- 5 missiles
- 5 guided aerial bombs
- 25 Shahed-136 "Geran-2" attack drones
- 3 "Molniya" drones
- 4 FPV drones
- 36 drones of an unspecified type
The strikes killed an 85-year-old woman in the village of Novoosynove and injured five other people. Energy facilities across the city and residential buildings were damaged.
The attack impacted the Slobidskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Osnovianskyi, Saltivskyi, and Kholodnohirskyi districts of Kharkiv. Significant damage was also reported in the Kupiansk, Bohodukhiv, Izium, Kharkiv, Lozova, and Chuhuiv districts. An unnamed military source stated the strikes were precisely aimed at heat and power supplies. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that a Kharkiv thermal power plant sustained very serious damage, while Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasized that the strikes targeted civilian facilities providing heat to residential areas.
This assault is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to destroy Ukraine's energy infrastructure, aiming to demoralize the population and create a humanitarian crisis. Such attacks highlight the enemy's strategic focus on civilian objects, leading to increased civilian casualties and heightened regional tension. Consequently, Ukraine continues to work on strengthening its defenses and restoring critical infrastructure to ensure security and stability in the country.
