Mass protests in Serbia: ultimatum issued to authorities.
In Serbia, in the city of Novi Sad, a roof collapse occurred at the railway station, resulting in 14 deaths and three people seriously injured. This led to mass protests, which are also taking place in the country's capital, Belgrade.
The protests took place in front of the Novi Sad city hall, where about 10,000 protesters gathered. They demand the resignation of the city's mayor, the prime minister, and the country's president due to allegations of corruption. People marched holding banners with the slogans "Blood on your hands" and "Corruption kills", and chanting "Arrest Vucic". The authorities have 48 hours to meet the protesters' demands.
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vučević, claims that the authorities are investigating the circumstances of the disaster and states that political responsibility cannot be avoided. During the protests, the police used tear gas, and protesters threw stones and paint cans at the city hall building, breaking several windows.
The railway station in Novi Sad opened in July 2024 after a reconstruction carried out by a Chinese contractor. Work was still ongoing at the Time of the collapse.
