According to the DownDetector website, the problems started around 5 AM and quickly spread to much of the country, affecting all major cities such as Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville. The cause of the nationwide outage, according to preliminary reports, was a failed system update at Telefónica - the multinational company that operates most of Spain's mobile networks.
