Kyiv's Paton Bridge Faces Critical Overload, Demanding Immediate Restoration.
The Condition of the Paton Bridge
According to TSN.ua: Since 2018, Kyiv's Paton Bridge has been classified as 'non-operational' due to its critical technical state, raising significant safety concerns for its continued use. An urgent restoration is now essential to keep this vital transport link open. This work will involve reinforcing the main steel girders and replacing the lighting poles. The bridge officially exhausted its designed service life in 2018, and its current technical condition is rated at the fifth and most severe level on the assessment scale.
The Need for Restoration
Originally designed to handle a daily traffic flow of 10,000 vehicles, the bridge now endures an actual load of 100,000 to 120,000 vehicles per day, a tenfold increase over its intended capacity. This immense strain is compounded by corrosion found throughout the entire structure, creating additional risks for its integrity. As a major artery connecting the city's banks, its failure would cause severe disruption to Kyiv's transport network.
"The bridge, in principle, cannot continue to be operated without carrying out repair or restoration work" — Oleksandr Shymanovskyi.
The restoration of the Paton Bridge will be carried out in two phases:
- The first phase will focus on strengthening the four main metal girders and their bracing systems.
- The second phase will involve repairing the cross beams, railings, and lighting columns.
It is important to note that the work will be conducted as a restoration, not a standard overhaul, due to the bridge's status as an architectural monument, which it received in 2004. These measures are vital to ensure the bridge's safe operation for years to come.
Restoring the Paton Bridge is a crucial step for ensuring road safety in Kyiv, as it plays a key role in the capital's transport infrastructure. Once the necessary work is completed, the bridge will once again meet modern safety and capacity standards, which will positively impact the city's traffic flow. Furthermore, preserving architectural monuments like the Paton Bridge contributes to safeguarding Ukraine's cultural heritage for future generations.
