Paton Bridge in Kyiv Deemed Unsafe: The Urgent Case for Immediate Repairs.
Paton Bridge in a State of Critical Disrepair
According to TSN.ua: The Paton Bridge in Kyiv is in a critical, officially hazardous state, declared as such in 2018, and requires urgent repairs due to corrosion that threatens public safety. Experts warn of potential structural failures, yet no concrete plans for its restoration are in place. This vital crossing over the Dnipro River is a key artery for the capital's traffic.
Constructed in 1953, the bridge has served as a major transport link for the city for decades. Its official designation as an emergency structure came in 2018 following an inspection that revealed severe defects. Between 2018 and 2019, the collapse of cross beams and sections of the roadway slab led to a partial closure of the bridge.
Recent Inspections and Current Condition
The most recent inspection was conducted in 2025, with the previous one taking place in 2020. During these examinations, specialists again highlighted serious corrosive damage that could lead to catastrophic consequences. Oleksandr Shymanovskyi, a bridge construction expert, stated:
“The situation with the bridge is more than critical.” — Oleksandr Shymanovskyi
He added that 'the Paton Bridge is in such a condition that it may not withstand even the current reduced loads.'
The bureaucratic process surrounding the bridge is also a cause for concern. In 2025, the bridge was returned to the balance sheet of the Kyiv City State Administration. However, despite this transfer, no actual plans for its repair currently exist. Shymanovskyi urged:
“The Paton Bridge needs to be saved before it is too late.” — Oleksandr Shymanovskyi
As the bridge remains in a critical state, the issue of its repair grows increasingly urgent. A lack of concrete action could lead to serious consequences for transport and the safety of Kyiv's residents.
The perilous state of the Paton Bridge alarms not only specialists but also the public, as it is one of the city's primary transport arteries. Without immediate action from authorities, the bridge could become dangerous for users, underscoring the vital importance of planning and funding its renovation. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for timely infrastructure maintenance to prevent similar crises in the future.
