Moldova Declares 15-Day Environmental Alert

According to TSN.ua: Starting March 16, 2026, the Moldovan government has enacted a 15-day environmental alert for the Dniester River basin due to petroleum product pollution. This decision follows the detection of technical oil slicks in the river on March 10 near the village of Lyadova. The contamination came to light after a series of preceding events, prompting urgent government action.

Root Causes of the River Pollution

On March 7, the Russian Federation launched an attack on energy infrastructure near the Dniester Hydroelectric Station. Experts suggest this strike may have contributed to the increased water pollution in the river. Moldovan authorities view this incident as another instance of ecological aggression by Russia.

Irina Ovcharenko, a government spokesperson, stated: 'This incident is yet another manifestation of Russia's ecological aggression.'

Moldova's Minister of Ecology, Alexandru Munteanu, commented on the situation, saying: 'We are taking this decision to prevent any threat to public health.' This underscores the severity of the crisis and the need for immediate measures to protect both the environment and citizens' well-being.

The environmental alert declaration involves a series of actions aimed at:

  • monitoring and eliminating the contamination;
  • ensuring public safety in the affected region.

Meanwhile, activists and experts are calling for heightened attention to ecological problems that may arise from aggressive actions by neighboring states.

The oil pollution of the Dniester River highlights the critical importance of environmental security in the region, especially amid potential military conflicts that could have unpredictable consequences for the natural environment. The Moldovan government's response also reflects growing concern over how external factors threaten the country's ecological stability. It is now essential for the international community to focus on these issues and support Moldova's efforts to combat environmental threats.
