Ukrainian Marine Dmytro Shalar's Release from Captivity and Ongoing Recovery.
Dmytro Shalar's Release
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian marine Dmytro Shalar was freed from captivity on February 5, 2023. He was captured in 2022 during the defense of Mariupol when he was just 20 years old. His release is part of ongoing prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia. Shalar is now undergoing a mandatory quarantine and rehabilitation program following his prolonged detention.
The Rehabilitation Process
The initial phase of his recovery is a 10-day quarantine period. His full rehabilitation process is expected to last approximately three weeks. Valeriy Shalar, Dmytro's father and a retired military officer with 32 years of service, communicated with his son immediately after the release. He reported that Dmytro is recovering and calls home several times a day.
Valeriy Shalar noted that while food provisions are currently adequate, his son struggles to eat normally due to the conditions of his long captivity.
"For almost a year, it was just porridge and water,"his father stated. Despite these challenges, the family remains hopeful for Dmytro's swift improvement.
The liberation of Marine Dmytro Shalar underscores the severe hardships endured by military personnel and their families during the war. Post-captivity rehabilitation is a critical and demanding stage that requires significant time and support. In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, such cases highlight both the immense personal sacrifices of soldiers and the enduring human cost of the war.
